Whatever your leaning, if you can't satisfy your propensity here, then you are on mission impossible. After another year living in England, where the social highlight of my week is a visit to the local grocery store, then to arrive in this gay mecca surrounded by gay bars, clubs and Go Go Boys all vying for one's attention......
"Welcome to the Pleasure Dome" (Thanks Frankie)
Another excellent gay hotel is across the street, The Ambiance, which I stayed at once and the Coppa Hotel and club is next door.
I tend to use the other entrance to the street, during the bewitching hours to avoid this perusal of my comings and goings.
On this trip I met a pleasant young man here and on inquiring what he would like to do, we finished up at the Issan club. Many of the club workers here in Pattaya hail from the Issan region of Thailand and as I have discovered previously, is a popular venue for them to visit, take in the show, dance and/or eat.
He asked if a couple of his friends could join up with us when their bar closed around 1.00 a.m. I like to see the boys interacting with each other so agreed. Consequently we ordered a large bottle of liquor and enjoyed the show while waiting for their arrival. At the appropriate time the whole Happy Place staff descended on us, including the manager. This was a little more interaction than I had envisaged, as the waiter rushed around the table pouring everyone a drink. Feeling disparaged I handed the quickly depleting bottle to one of the boys who I had shared a laugh with in the club and we took our leave.
In contrast on a visit to the Issan Club two years ago I came with a guy I was spending quite a lot of time with and he ordered just a small mickey of Scotch. On that occasion I had a ball dancing to the Issan music. Here in a Thailand club, people just get up and start dancing around the tables. My friend was not into dancing but I made eye contact with this girl who also seemed to be busting to hit the boards, so we struck out. But getting back to the liquor use, next day at the beach my friend pulled the mickey out of his back pack, still half full.
There are about a dozen Go Go Bars in and around Boyz Town as well as a couple that put on erotic shows, that frankly I found distasteful. (Maybe I am a prude) Prices at these establishments are on the high side, which is understandable to cover their costs.
Now if you can,t find what you are looking for here in Boyz Town there is another gay community just 10 min. away at Sunee Plaza. When I say 10 min, you can just about walk it in that time, or hop on a motorcycle taxi. and it's just a few minutes. You go out on the road towards Jomtein, but turn left at the V.C. hotel.
Here you will find several more Go Go bars and more beer bars.
On my last visit they had installed a big stage across the back and had a single dancer performing. He was quite a good dancer and after awhile toured the clientele for tips.
The area does have a reputation for pushing the envelope with legal infractions, so one needs to be careful.
But I had some very pleasant experiences here with the friendly staff.
On one occasion a young man that I returned to the hotel with did not pass scrutiny. This is why I like the hotel to check as I looked at his I.D. and could not see a problem.
Currently the most active bar would appear to be Eros Bar. They are always advertising parties (Which are usually just a few extra balloons draped around), but the ads give them good exposure and the boys are quite active when you visit.
The third gay community in the area is the Jomtein Complex, comprising mostly beer bars but with very friendly staff. As they open a couple of hours earlier than the clubs, they can be a good starting off point to the evening. The gay beach at Jomtein is quite close to this complex, along with several gay guest houses, which appear to be reasonably priced.
I stayed one night at Tui's Guest house right on the gay beach, to see if it could be suitable for future visits. While the room and basic services where fine during business hours, after about 1.0 a.m. everything came to a standstill. Staying at Boyz Town if I am not too sleepy I walk out onto the promenade or Walking st and everything is buzzing till at least 5.0 a.m. which is great as I have to pack a lot of living into a very short stay.
I walked out of Tui's around 2.00 a.m. and the strip was deserted, with the exception of one hustler who suggested we take a walk up this alley!! Yeah right!
I came out of the room again at 6.00a.m. and the only person around was a security guy and I couldn't even get a bottle of water till 8.0a.m. This location will not work for me.
